Papunya Tula Artists
What Needed Building
- Custom Shopify Theme
- SAM Platform Integration
- Artist & Artwork Catalogue
- Editorial Storytelling
- Performance & SEO
- Hosting & Support
Papunya Tula needed a Shopify store that could carry every painting with the care and provenance the work deserves.
Papunya Tula Artists is one of the most significant Aboriginal art collectives in Australia. Founded in 1972, the company is wholly owned by Indigenous artists from the Western Desert, predominantly of the Luritja and Pintupi language groups, with 49 shareholders and around 120 active artists. Every artwork carries cultural significance, story and provenance that needs to be honoured wherever it appears.
The brief was a fully custom Shopify storefront that could carry the breadth of the catalogue with the editorial weight the work deserves, paired with deep integration into the SAM platform so artworks, artists, dimensions, stories and pricing stay in sync without manual data entry.
From Idea to Execution
- Custom Shopify Theme
- SAM API Integration
- Artist Profiles
- Catalogue Sync
- Editorial Content
- Technical SEO
We designed and built a fully custom Shopify theme from the ground up: editorial typography, generous space for the art to breathe, dedicated artist profile pages, and the storytelling and provenance details every collector and curator looks for. The shopping experience is clear, respectful, and gallery-grade.
Underneath, the store talks directly to SAM, Papunya Tula’s artwork inventory and provenance platform. Every new piece, artist record, story, dimension and price flows from SAM into Shopify automatically, so the gallery team manages the collection in one place and the website always reflects what is actually available.
The whole storefront is engineered for performance: lean theme code, image optimisation, smart caching, and structured data so the right artwork can be found in search and represented properly when it is shared.
Wins & Outcomes
Papunya Tula Artists now have a custom-built Shopify storefront that does justice to a fifty-year cultural legacy, and an inventory pipeline that lets the gallery team focus on the artists, not the spreadsheet.
Every artwork on the site stays in sync with SAM in real time, the catalogue scales as the artists keep painting, and the store is built to grow with the collective, backed by Defyn for ongoing web development Sydney support.
