The short version

WordPress the way it should be built

Most WordPress sites are a theme from a marketplace, thirty plugins and a page builder holding it all together. Ours are custom themes with the sections your business needs, so they load fast, stay secure and your team can edit them without breaking anything.

We are an official WordPress.com Pro Partner and WooCommerce Pro Partner, which means priority support from their teams when your site needs it.

Good fit if

  • Your WordPress site is slow, breaks when a plugin updates, or nobody on your team dares touch it
  • You have outgrown a template or a page builder and need a site built around how the business runs
  • Your developer has moved on and you need someone local to take over, tidy up and keep it safe
  • You are launching or rebuilding and want the site, the hosting and the support from one team

Not a fit if you want a five-page site built from a purchased theme by Friday. That is a fair thing to want, and there are cheaper ways to get it than us.

How a WordPress project runs

Five steps, in this order

What the site has to do, who uses it and what is wrong with the current one. You get a written scope and a fixed price before anything starts, not an estimate that grows.

Page layouts designed around the actions you want visitors to take, shown at phone and desktop size. You sign off the design before a line of code is written.

A custom theme on Advanced Custom Fields, built on a private staging address you can click around on as it takes shape. Fast, accessible and editable by your team.

Content loaded, every old URL redirected so you keep your rankings, forms tested, analytics connected. We launch on a day you choose and stay on the phone while it goes live.

Managed hosting, core and plugin updates, backups, security monitoring and small changes, handled by the people who built the site.

What we do on WordPress

A theme built for your brand and your content on Advanced Custom Fields, with page sections your team can add, remove and rearrange through the normal WordPress editor without a developer. No Elementor, no Divi, no builder licence to keep paying for, and nothing that breaks when a plugin updates.

Fast by default, accessible, and built so the site can grow: new service pages, locations, team members and case studies without a rebuild.

Product and category architecture, checkout, shipping and payments set up properly, and the integrations that keep stock and orders honest: Australia Post, Stripe, PayPal, Afterpay, Xero and MYOB. Built so the store is part of the site rather than bolted onto it.

If the store is the whole business, we may point you to Shopify instead. We build on both, so we have no reason to push you either way.

Moving off an old theme, a page builder, Wix or Squarespace, or another agency, with every old URL redirected so your rankings come with you. Content is migrated, not retyped, and the old site stays live until the new one is checked and signed off.

We have moved sites that were held together by one developer’s memory and thirty plugins. It is more common than you think, and it is fixable.

Real fixes to the theme, images, fonts and hosting rather than a caching plugin and a prayer. We measure Core Web Vitals on the pages that matter before and after, on a real phone, and we fix the things that actually move the numbers: oversized images, render-blocking scripts, slow queries, bloated plugins.

Speed is not only a Google factor. It is the difference between a visitor reading your page and leaving before it loads.

Hacked or neglected sites cleaned, hardened and monitored, then kept up to date so it does not happen again. Malware removed, backdoors closed, admin accounts and passwords tidied, two-factor turned on, and the plugins nobody remembers installing removed.

After the clean-up the site moves onto our managed hosting with backups, updates and monitoring, so the next problem is caught before you hear about it from a customer.

Our own managed WordPress hosting with backups, core and plugin updates, security monitoring and a local number on 02 9834 4119 when something needs changing. Small changes are turned around in days by the people who built the site.

Most clients stay with us for hosting after launch, some for many years. It is a choice, not a lock-in: you own the domain, the content and the code, and we help if you ever want to move.

What clients say

Rated 5.0 from 31 Google reviews. Three of them, in the clients’ own words.

A much cleaner website that loads faster, works properly on mobile, and is easier for our team to update.

From the start, the team understood our goals and quickly identified the key issues holding our website back: performance, usability and SEO. They were organised, responsive, and explained everything in plain English. The end result is a much cleaner website that loads faster, works properly on mobile, and is easier for our team to update.

From a website built from the ground up to updates on existing pages, every brief has been taken to the next level.

What a pleasure it has been working with Defyn over the past six months across a range of projects. From building a website from the ground up and making updates to existing pages, to developing the brand identity for a brand-new event, every brief I have given them has been taken to the next level with consistently high-quality results. The team combines creativity with structure, and they are incredibly easy to work with.

Bianca Jones, Google review

After more than two years with them, I can confidently say they are one of the best agencies out there.

After more than two years with them, web hosting and a customised website made to our needs and desires, I can confidently say they are one of the best agencies out there. They are always at my fingertips whenever I need support, guidance, or advice. It is rare to find a team that truly cares about your business like they do.

Questions

Before you ask for the review

The things Sydney business owners ask us before a WordPress project starts. If yours is not here, put it in the form and we will answer it in the review.

Do you use page builders like Elementor or Divi?

No. We build custom themes on Advanced Custom Fields, with a set of page sections designed for your business that your team fills in through the normal WordPress editor. It is faster to load, harder to break and does not lock you into a builder plugin that needs paying for and updating forever.

If you already have an Elementor or Divi site, we can look after it and improve it, and we will tell you when it is worth rebuilding rather than patching.

Can you take over a WordPress site someone else built?

Yes. We take a copy of the site, look at the theme, plugins, hosting and security, and write up what is solid, what is fragile and what is costing you. Then you decide: fix and maintain what is there, or rebuild.

Either way, the site moves onto our managed hosting with backups, updates and monitoring, and you get a local number to call when something needs changing.

How much does a website cost?

It depends on what the site has to do. A brochure site for a trade or professional practice, an online store with hundreds of products and a custom web application with logins and integrations are three very different jobs, and we price them differently.

What we will not do is quote before we have looked. The free website review tells you what your current site is getting wrong, what a rebuild would need to include and roughly what it would cost, and you can take that to anyone. If you want a ballpark before that conversation, call us on 02 9834 4119 and we will give you one over the phone.

How long does a website take to build?

A brochure site for a small business usually takes six to eight weeks from kickoff to launch. An online store or a site with custom features is more like ten to sixteen weeks. The single biggest variable is content: when the words and photos are ready early, the build runs on time.

You will always know where the project is. We work in stages, you sign off each one before the next starts, and the site is built on a private staging address you can click around on long before launch day.

Who owns the website when it is done?

You do. The domain is registered in your name, the site lives in a WordPress or Shopify account you own, and you get the login to everything on launch day. There is no proprietary builder holding your content hostage.

Most clients stay with us for hosting and support because it is easier, but that is a choice, not a lock. If you ever want to move, we hand over the files and help with the move.
